He acquitted himself nobly, as always, in his earnest advocacy of Garfield's election, many times addressing multitudes when he was physically unable to do so. Be it said to the everlasting credit of General Grant, that he, though in no sense a public speaker, appeared at many meetings and said a few words in commendation of the ticket. Probably the largest meeting and the most important one of the whole campaign was that held in Warren, Ohio, when a desperate effort was made to induce Mr. Conkling to appear with General Grant, thus committing himself to the support of Garfield and Arthur.
