ed to the bank in his neighborhood, fitted out an expedition of twenty men under command of Chief Engineer Thomas Doughty. The party, after incredible labor, forcing their way through the thick undergrowth and vines, surprised the steamer lying at the bank and captured her. A few moments later Mr. Doughty caught sight of another steamer, which he also captured in a similar manner, and besides her crew found himself in possession of nine Confederate soldiers, commanded by an aide to General ( Dick ) Taylor. The aide had been sent up for the Fulton, a remarkably fine vessel, to transport some troops across Atchafalia Bay. The other steamer was filled with military stores. There was an impassable shoal across the Red River at that time, and as Chief Engineer Doughty could not take the steamers out of the river he burned them with all their stores, and returned safely to his vessel.
