Stephen Langton, the Archbishop of Canterbury, supported the barons and the people, and when it was seen that nothing but force would do, the barons set out, and gathering men as they went, came up with the King at the historic Runnymede, near Windsor, and he, seeing their forces, was constrained on June 15, 1215, to sign the great charter, the text of which is as follows: Magna Charta John, by the grace of God, King of England, Lord of Ireland, Duke of Normandy and Aquitaine, and Count o part as on the part of the barons, that all the things aforesaid shall be observed bona fide and without evil subtlety.
