Bancroft, Edward, 1744-1820
Naturalist; born in Westfield, Mass., Jan. 9, 1744; was a pupil of Silas Deane (q. v.) when the latter was a school-master.
His early education was not extensive.
Apprenticed to a mechanic, he ran away, in debt to his master, and went to sea; but returning with means, he compensated his employer.
Again he went to sea; settled in Guiana, South America, as a physician, in 1763, and afterwards made his residence in London, where, in 1769, he published a Natural history of Guiana.
He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and Fellow of the Royal Society.
While Franklin was in England on a diplomatic mission, Dr. Bancroft became intimate with him; and through the influence of the philosopher became a contributor to the philosopher became a contributor to the Monthly review.
He was suspected by the British government of participation in the attempt to burn the Portsmouth dock-yards, and he fled to Passy, France.

Shepard, William -1817
Military officer; born near Boston, Mass., Dec. 1, 1737; served in the provincial army in 1757-63; commissioned colonel of the 4th Massachusetts Regiment in 1777; remained in the army till 1783, taking part in twenty-two actions; settled in Medway, Mass., appointed brigadier-general of militia; prevented Daniel Shays's followers from seizing the Springfield arsenal in 1786; and was member of Congress in 1797-1803.
He died in Westfield, Mass., Nov. 11, 1817.

Thorpe, Thomas Bangs 1815-1878
Author; born in Westfield, Mass., March 1, 1815; received a collegiate education; settled in Louisiana in 1836 and devoted himself to literature; served in the Mexican War and was promoted colonel for meritorious services.
His publications include The Big bear of Arkansas; Our army of the Rio Grande; Our army at Monterey; A voice to America; Scenes in Arkansaw; Reminiscences of Charles L. Elliott, etc. He died in New York City in October, 1878.
