The obelisk erected by Augustus in the Campus Martius was brought by his orders from Egypt. It was originally hewn for Pharaoh Sesothis, according to Pliny, and was 76 3/4 feet in hight. After being long buried in ruins, it was disinterred but not reerected by Pope Benedict XIV., and was found to be broken. Pliny states that in its position in the Campus Martius it was applied to a singular purpose by the late Emperor Augustus, that of marking the shadows projected by the sun, and so measuring the length of the days and nights. With this object a stone pavement was laid, the extreme length of which corresponded exactly with the length of the shadow thrown by the obelisk at the sixth hour (noon) on the day of the winter solstice.
