Herald, off the river Plate; there can be little doubt, however, that when this amount of line had been run out the ship was miles to leeward of the sinker (a 9-pound lead), and no subsequent sounding in any part of the world leads us to infer that the ocean anywhere attains nearly this enormous depth.
