In 1808 New England was severed from the diocese of Baltimore, Boston was erected into an Episcopal see, and Dr. de Cheverus made its first bishop. He remained in charge of this diocese until 1823, when he returned to his native country as Bishop of Montauban. A few years later he was created Archbishop of Bordeaux, Cardinal and Peer of the Realm. Cardinal Cheverus was a noble and charming character.
