Infantry was detailed as a guard for the supply trains, and met with no loss, as was also the case with the 3d, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th light batteries, which were also engaged. In this battle Col., afterwards Gen., W. F. Bartlett was very severely wounded in the head, and did not again return to his regiment; Brigadier-General Webb speaks highly of the conduct of Colonel (now brigadier-general) Bartlett of the 57th Mass. (General Hancock's report, Official War Records, 67, p. 326.) and among the killed or mortally wounded in the regiment were Capt. J. W. Gird and Second Lieut. J. M. Childs, both of Worcester.
