ieutenancy in the Seventh infantry, and served on frontier duty in Indian Territory, in the Florida war, 1839-42, and was subsequently stationed in Louisiana until 1845, when he joined the army of occupation in Texas, and was promoted to captain. He participated in the war with Mexico, being engaged in the defense of Fort Brown it Schuyler, New York harbor, until 1844, after which he was assistant to the chief engineer at Washington, D. C., until 1846, with promotion to first lieutenant in 1845. During the Mexican war he was chief engineer of the army of the West in New Mexico, constructing Fort Marcy at Santa Fe. He afterward served at Washington, and wn college, D. C., and at the United States military institute, being graduated with promotion to second lieutenant of engineers at the head of the famous class of 1845.
