Schumpert, born in Newberry county, S. C., was the son of Jacob K. and Harriet (Abney) Schumpert, both natives of South Carolina. His great-grandfather was William Schumpert, a native of Berlin, who, upon emigrating to America, located in Newberry county. Mr. Schumpert's mother, Harriet Abney, comes from good old Revolutionary sHarriet Abney, comes from good old Revolutionary stock, her grandfather and several uncles having served in that war on the colonial side. Mr. Schumpert was reared in Newberry county, on his father's plantation, and at the age of ten he was placed in the Newberry college, which he left at the age of fourteen, 1862, to enter the war.
