The winter of 1863-64 was without stirring events in Louisiana Banks was taking breath and stock in New Orleans.
Taylor, too busy for leisure, was establishing depots, both labor and forage, between the Boeuf and Pleasant Hill—the country thereabout being utterly barren.
Out of abounding caution, he left small detachments to guard these depots.
