ndfather, Thomas Huffmaster, a Hessian soldier who had been taken prisoner and settled here after the war, met with a tragic end after the great tornado of August 23, 1851. The roof of a house near by was blown over, crushing in the ell of his own, where he sat at the window. Mr. Norton grew up and followed his father's trade as a carpenter, assisting him in the construction of many buildings, continuing thus until his accident. He then gave up active work, devoting his time to his tenement interests and local affairs. He took an active interest in the Royall house and the Historical Society, of which he was long a member. He gave unostentatiously to local charities and, though not a member, was a constant attendant at worship at the West Medford Congregational Church. On December 22, 1880, he married Lilla M. Strobridge of Barnet, Vt., who survives him, as does also a younger brother, Benjamin, who with Thomas were the only two of six children who grew to maturity. —H. G
