Messrs. Jno. N. Humphreys and others.-- Gentlemen: I received your communication, covering the preamble and resolutions of a "meeting of the Douglas men of Richmond," by which I perceive they have conferred on me the distinguished honor of being their candidate for a seat in the Convention. I was gratified to discover, from the resolutions passed, that the "Douglas men of Richmond" asserted their right to participate in the deliberations of the Convention by presenting a candidate. This is proper. I only wish an abler and more enlightened man than myself could have received the nomination. It is a fact undisputed, that the honor, never before enjoyed by the Opposition, of securing the electoral vote of this State, was attributable entirely to the "Douglas men," Why, then, should they be now overlooked, in the very first effort at conservative action, rendered necessary by the recent Presidential election?
