Lucas, numbering 100 good and true men; and I think in this company of old men, 75 good soldiers would offer their services to the State whenever the necessity occurs. They are determined to resist Northern aggression to the last. There is but one opinion among our people. Mr. R. D. Montague was nominated for the House of Delegates at our last Court. All parties met, and the nomination was made by acclamation. A man by the name of Enos Price was arrested last night for tampering with slaves. His tool, a slave of Dr. Otey, near Blacksburg, operated for him in stealing; but Price heard that Dr. Otey had a large sum of money in his house, and he tried to get the boy to join him in his hellish plot. This the slave could not stand, and betrayed Price. The circumstances are very strong against him, and he will be tried at next Court. The crops of wheat, rye and oats are fine — I think the best we have had for years. Montgomery.
