"In the Church of the Messiah, (Unitarian,) an enormous flag draped the pulpit and communion table, and Dr. Osgood preached from the text, 'Lift up a standard to the people. ' He spoke of the standard as standing for the nation: its whole country, people and destiny; and urged the duty of standing by it decidedly, bravely and joyfully. The Star- Spangled Banner was song at the close. Several churches of different denominations thought it no desecration of the Sabbath to sing the 'Star-Spangled Banner' during their services."
