The spirit of our people.
--A correspondent of the Lexington Gazette, writing from Strasburg, June 13, announces the occupation of Romney by the Federalists, and says:
"This morning as this news began to circulate among the gentry of the country, an excitement was produced the like of which this region has not witnessed since the wild days of the Revolution and the old French war.--Old men and young, men of almost every standing, rushed to their houses, took down their rifles and guns, slung their shot pouches and powder horns, saddled their horses and put right off for Winchester, almost without a word of adieu to their families.--In a few hours the road from this place to Newtown, between this and Winchester, was lined with troops, baggage wagons, and our country militia, armed with any kind of weapon, some on horseback and some on foot, all fired with a solemn and firm resolve to whip the dastardly Yankees back from Virginia soil, or die in the effort to do so. Last night our whole militia were ordered to rendezvous at Strasburg as soon as possible.
Shenandoah has furnished about 1000 volunteers, and we will all go on Friday.
This is hard on us. Harvest and hay-making are just coming on, (ready,) but mowing Yankees suits us very well, if we can just get to see them — that is all we want.
We don't desire to leave the crops; (we have but few negroes here,) but if there was a certainty of a "show" at them, we could all hurrah
Harper's Ferry is, we suppose, certainly evacuated; for what reason we are not in formed.
We hope, though, to get a speedy fight.
Shenandoah rifles will count.
