I have only time to write you a line, to say that the news of the secession of South Carolina was received here with many demonstrations of delight. A "Lone Star" flag has been raised, guns fired, and bonfires burnt. Our people are fully aroused and prepared for any emergency. They believe the day for compromise is past, and that there is little hope of redressing our wrongs in the Union.
