On the "Hickory Road," Chesterfield, about two miles and a half from Petersburg, Va., is to be seen hanging in effigy the Hon. Abraham Lincoln, the man who, unfortunately for his pocket friends, never was destined to be the President of the United States. Over his head is a placard informing the public whom the effigy is intended for. Underneath the gallows is a platform and trap, and through the trap hangs the legs of the effigy.
