s forced to appear before them with uncovered head.--The ministry was dismissed and a general amnesty granted. The revolution, which already had conquered a great many rights for the people, soon, however, lost its strength.--It wasted all its power in speech-making, processions, party strifes; and the royal party slowly but steadily regained its grasp-upon the Prussian people, and their previous influence was soon entirely restored. The Frankfort Parliament in 1849 offered the King the imperial crown of Germany, which he, however, refused. Two attempts have been made on the King's life during his reign, one in 1844 and another in 1850. In 1857 the King was seized with temporary insanity, which finally compelled him to give up the administration of affairs. He went to Tyrol and subsequently to Italy. His brother William became Prince Regent. The son of the Regent, Prince Frederick William, who in 1858 married the Queen of England's daughter, is the heir apparent to the throne.
