The River. --The waters of James River continued to rise yesterday, and exhibited a turbulence that created apprehensions of damage to property. The rise between daylight and 1 o'clock P. M, was about eighteen inches, and the small islands in this vicinity were overflowed. At Mayo's Island, a large amount of plank and other lumber was in a perilous position, but the workmen managed to get most of it out of the reach of the water. The wharves at Rocketts were submerged, and as there was a prospect of a still further advance of the water, Messrs. Ludlam & Watson had the goods removed from the basement of their warehouse. On the opposite side, the encroachments of the water upon the ship-yard of Abrahams & Son, caused a suspension of work on the new ship. The mills at Manchester stopped operations, temporarily, from the same cause. The river was higher yesterday than it was during the last freshet, and if it continues to rise, the apprehensions of damage may be realized.
