Our evacuation of Charleston on the 24th of July, just one week after the victory of Scary Creek, was a movement quite unexpected and some what misunderstood by the inhabitants of the valley. Left exposed, at the mercy of an invading foe, they could not be expected fully to appreciate the necessity for the retrograde movement, or the military propriety of keeping it strictly secret until every preparation for its immediate execution had been made.
