To the Editors of the Dispatch:--I do not know who is the god of tobacco, but as Bacchus used to be the god of wine, he has, in my judgment, the best title to the honor. Experience does not enable me to declare how strong is the inebriate's thirst fiskey; at any rate, it cannot be any less so. What, then, do you imagine our suffering must have been in the army of the Northwest, where none of the blessings of Bacchus are to be procured — neither whiskey, brandy, Madeira, nor tobacco! Old Honest John Dryden wrote as follows: "Bacchus blessings are a treasure, Drinking is thBacchus blessings are a treasure, Drinking is the soldier's treasure, Rich the treasure, Sweet the pleasure, Sweet is pleasure after pain." This is all true enough, and sweet enough would it be to take a horn occasionally, after the pain through which the soldier passes in this cold climate. The bracing morning air is a splendid appetizer for a dram, beyond all question.
