we were lost, that our calculations had failed us, and that hunger followed quickly the past excitement. Some companies ware for taking the back trail, others for starving in their places, but a majority were still willing to penetrate further into the unknown mountain wilds.--About this time, at the critical moment, when energy was giving way to despair, some habitations (the first we'd seen) were reported about a mile further on.
