Richmond Mechanism. --We have examined a beautiful brass padlock, made by Mr. Wm. W. Snead, of this city, which, in point of ingenuity and finish, is the best work of the sort we ever saw. This lock is designed chiefly for railroad purposes though it will answer as well for any fastening where complete security is an object. We take pleasure in noticing every fresh evidence of the skill of Richmond mechanics, on whom we have to depend henceforth for all the useful fabrications of iron, brass, and other metals. Already the war has had a most beneficial effect in bringing out the latent energies of our people, and we confidently look forward to the time when the useful arts will have their representatives in every branch; when Southern men will make the four- cylinder press, or the delicate machinery of a watch, with as much facility as they now do the steam-engine and the deadly rifled-cannon.
