n's Washington news department consists in an account of a general alarm throughout the Federal lines on the Potomac on Saturday last. It seems that a company of infantry and another of cavalry, be longing to the Confederate Army, advanced to Minor's hill for a brief reconnoisance. The Federal scouts, scared out of their wits, retreated to their camp with the news that "at least three regiments," with "six pieces of artillery," and any number of "Black Horse," had appeared directly in their fess. All slept upon their arms. Several large bodies of reserves were transported across the Potomac from the vicinity of Washington, to be at hand in the dreadful battle that every one was sure of taking place very soon and very suddenly. The truth of the matter, however, was soon discovered. The men were placed "at ease," the reserves ordered back, and Minor's hill was taken possession of in order to afford the "rebels" no more opportunities to get up a panic, from that quarter at least.
