State Convention.Friday, Nov. 22, 1861. The Convention met at 10 o'clock. Prayer by the Rev. Dr. Hoge, of the 2d Presbyterian Church. Resolutions. The following resolutions were offered: By Mr. Neblett-- Resolved, That the President of the Convention be, and he is hereby, authorized to sign the name of Richard H. From Norfolk. examination of witnesses in the Hughes case-- active Practice of the Yankees at old Point — Conference proceedings, &c. [special Correspondence of the Dispatch.] Norfolk, Nov. 22, 1861. The examination of witnesses in the case of young Hughes, on trial in the Circuit Court, was concluded yesterday, and the argument opened by Simon S. Stubbs, Esq., in an able and effective address to the jury in behalf of the Commonwealth. The strongest points in the ease were clearly stated, the law fully and plainly set forth, and the character of the offence elucidated in an eloquent and impressive manner. Tazewell Taylor and John E. Ford, Esqs., followed, as counsel for the prisoner, with strong and convincing argument, and stirring appeals, that seemed to reach the minds and hearts of the jurors. Hon. John S. Millson, also counsel for the accused, will speak this morning, and after the closing address by Mr. Stubbs, Commonwealth's Attorney, the case will
