g in water, I was delayed 15 minutes, thus permitting the enemy to approach to within four miles of the wharf before I could get under weigh. The Pamlico and Oregon then stood out to meet them, and when out about a mile and a half from the wharf a three-masted propeller schooner opened on us with her rifled gun and fired thres much short of our bows. Being then within two miles of each other, put the boat about, in order to bring our riffed cannon to bear, and we, the Pamlico and Oregon, fired a number of shot at the schooner, which were rapidly acknowledged. When she suddenly declined the combat and concluded to haul off, ran away to the southem brig-of-war, and in the end put down the Sound to the east ward. The brig returned to the fleet off Ship Island, and I returned to Mississippi City and completed the business at which I was engaged when interrupted by the Lincolnites.
