Two events have lately occurred that have surprised the people of this Confederacy as each as the famous feat of the cow in swallowing the grindstone. Roanoke Island and Dan Donelson have fallen! Everybody is wonderfully astounded; yet almost everybody seems to have foreseen that these were the identical grindstones to be first swallowed by the voracious Yankees; and who are overwhelmed with wonder that the Secretary of Wider that we have a war frontier by land and sea of five thousand miles, upon each hundred miles of which the Federals, with their enormous power of concentration by land and water transportation, could throw a force as large as that thrown upon Donelson, and of course requiring 40,000 men to defend them. This calculation would give fifty points to defend, which, at 40,000 men each, would require a total of 2,000,000 men. Has Mr. Benjamin this number of men? If he had the men, has he the arms,
