This company, commanded by Captain William Clarke, took position on a bluff on the St. Mary's river, and waited the approach of a Federal gunboat. As they approached, a man at the masthead, espying Clark's company, cried out, "Here are the damned rebels." "Yes," said Clarks, "here we are!"
