back favorably the bill to authorize the issuance of Treasury notes of a denomination less than five dollars. As before explained, the bill authorized the utterance of one, two, three, and four dollar notes, and notes for the fractious of these sums, provided the whole amount issued does not exceed five millions of dollars in the aggregate. A bill for increasing the clerical force in the Treasury Department and in the office of the Assistant Treasurer was taken up and considered. Mr. Brown, of Miss, offered an amendment to the last clause requiring the Secretary of the Treasury to give preference to applicants for clerkships under the bill to those who have served in the army, and have been discharged on account of physical inability, or from wounds received in battle. Mr. Parnwell, of South Carolina, opposed the amendment because he looked upon it as an indirect mode of pensioning disabled soldiers. Brownstuffs, 40 cents; shipstuffs, 70 cents. Oil — Tanners', $1.12a1.50; machine, $1.50a$2 per gallon. Oats — We quote 80 cents per bushel. Rye--$1.50a$2.00 per bushel Seed — Clover Seed, $12a$14--latter by retail; Timothy, $5½a$6½ Soda — Best English, 40 cents per lb. Sugars — Brown, 24a26 cents per lb.; coffee, 27a28 cents. All qualities firm. Salt — Some sales of North Carolina Salt at $11 per stock of 100 lbs: Tobacco — The breaks of Tobacco are small, and most of the tobacco offered at this time is re-opened. There is not so much animation in the market, and prices are lower. We quote inferior Lucas at $2½a$2¾ good $3a$3¾ inferior leaf $5a$5½; good $6½ 7 ½; fine $8a$9½a$10. Tallow — 15a16 cents per lb.
