utes, the enemy doing his best to damage and destroy private property. But in this he almost entirely failed. Though six or seven houses were struck, none were burned or very seriously damaged. Numbers of the residents were for a time in extreme danger, and the escape of some was almost miraculous. After the bombardment the Federal troops were landed, and getting information from some negroes of the position of three companies of the 3d Mississippi regiment, under command of Lt. Col. Mellen, they proceeded to attack them. The Confederate troops received the enemy with ten or twelve rounds of a couple of pieces of artillery, which had no effect, and then fell back about three miles to Wolf river, bringing off their artillery. The enemy then approached and shelled and burned the Confederate camp and camp equipage, leaving scarcely a vestige of either. The enemy retired to their boats about nine o'clock at night. But before doing so, the Federal officers requeste
