The following letter from New York, which we copy from a late Washington paper, will be perused with interest — particularly that portion which relates to Dr. Charles Mackay:
New York, April 24, 1862
With many other people having a talent for dawdling, I followed the current this morning to the Supreme Court, (Judge Barnard presiding,) where the celebrated Mr. Edwin James and several of our prominent lawyers were pitted against each other in the big Hackley (street-cleaning) contract case.
It seems that a person named Lewis Davis, in some way supposed to be interested with Benjamin and Fernando Wood, claims, as assignee of the forms, one-fourth part of the profits of the contract; (estimated to be worth $60,000 per annum,) which, not having been paid over by the parties owning the other three-fourths, is now sought to be recovered by process at law, to the great detestation of the profession and disgust of those who must perforce remunerate the

Wanted
--one hundred Negro men. We wish to hire for the balance of the year , one hundred able- bodied Negro men, to work at the Salt Works to Smythe and Washington retailer Va. We want them chiefly for wood-choppers and teamsters, and we will pay twelve dollars per month terms bound and clothing and pay travelling expenses to and from this place; also, the expenses of any master or agent who will bring all or more hands.
This action to perfectly quiet, but owners can remove their slaves from here whenever they form them in danger from the enemy.
We refer to McDaniel & Irby Lynchburg and Spolts & Marvey Richmond, who will pay hires monthly or quarterly.

Runaway--$20 to $50 reward.
--Ranaway, on 1st of Feb'y, my man George, 22 years old, black; round features; weighs about 160 pounds; 5 feet 8 or 10 inches high; erect; a hoarse quick manner of speech, and may be called good looking.
Having been raised by the late Wiley Dickinson, near Barboursville, he has been and will lurk in that region, or may have in with our army in some manner — most likely as a cook — and now on the Peninsula or gone towards the enemy.
If found in the army or beyond Culpeper C. H., and delivered in jail not farther than Richmond, so that I get him again, I will give $50, otherwise, I will give the first sum. S. W. Ficklin. Charlottesville April 24, 1862 ap 25--12
