A meeting, attended by about six thousand people, was held at Astone under Lyne, to consider the crisis in the cotton districts. A motion calling on the Government to recognize the Confederate States, and adopt Mr. Cobden's proposed alteration in maritime law, was proposed. An amendment was offered, calling on the Governments of America, England, and France to crush out the rebellion, but on a division the original motion was carried by a considerable majority. The
