he jury of the case. John T. Ellis was put on trial for stealing over $200 from James T. Lane, a soldier, in a house near the corner of 24th and Main streets, a few weeks ago. The jury acquitted the prisoner, though the circumstances surrounding the case were not such as to relieve the prisoner of a suspicion of guilt. John T. Smith was next tried for stealing $50 from Josiah H. Barris, at the O K drinking saloon, next to the old scale-house, on 17th street. It appeared that Harris and another party were engaged in a game of cards, for money, with another party, and, a dispute occurring, he had thrown off his coat to fight, when Smith, a spectator, marched off with it. The money was in a pocket of the coat. Smith, who hails from Vicksburg, had no lawyer, and pleaded his own case. The jury gave him one year in the Penitentiary. The Grand Jury assembled, and, after presenting Sigismond Zuloski for larceny, for stealing an overcoat from Wm. S. Reed, adjourned sine die.
