the Washington Chronicle, of May 6th, was received. I heard a portion of it read on its way to Gen. Lee's headquarters. Here are my recollections: Vallandigham has been arrested. Three doors ols shattered at Chancellorsville; Sedgwick laurelled with success at marye's Hill, in the rear of Lee; the position at Chancellorsville impregnable, &c. They speak of Hooker's glorious generalship, Nt know, he says, whether Gen. Hooker will march on to Richmond, or, by a flank movement, compel Gen. Lee's army to retreat. He feels confident, however, as Hooker has successfully crossed the RappahaBanks's ford, and culminated in the splendid fight and triumphant victory at Chancellorsville. Gen. Lee said the enemy's position could not have been stronger. They had three lines of entrenchments.ir report of the fight. I have seen one which speaks of Hooker's successful advance, his getting Lee in the right place, the rebels would be compelled to fight, could not escape, &c. It is said Linc
hese he met at Cross Keys and Port Republic on the 8th and 9th of June, when he obtained another decided victory. The following characteristic dispatch announces his victory: Near Port Republic, 9th, Via Staunton, June 10th, 1862. To S. Cooper, Adj't Gen'l: Through God's blessing, the enemy near Port Republic was this day routed, with the loss of six pieces of his artillery. (Signed,) T. J. Jackson, Major-Gen'l Commanding. This, for the time, closed his operations in the Valley, and his command was ordered to join Gen. Lee, which it did in time to participate in the series of battles which delivered Richmond from the siege under which it had been laid by McClellan. In all these battles Gen. Jackson bore a conspicuous part, as he did subsequently at Cedar Run, Manassas Plains, Harper's Ferry, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. At Chancellorsville fate ordered that his useful career should be closed, and over his loss a bleeding country is now called to mourn.
. New York, 7.--Nothing concerning war matters has been telegraphed from Washington. The World says: "We learn by a special messenger that a great battle was fought on Tuesday. Hooker, with his army, was driven back across the Rappahannock. Lee is being heavily reinforced. The last battle exceeds in slaughter those of the previous day." Nothing has been heard from Stoneman. It is impossible to doubt that his force has been captured. [second Dispatch.] Petersburg, May 10. --The Express has the New York World of the 7th inst. It acknowledges the defeat of Hooker and his retreat to the north bank of the Rappahannock. It says Lee, being heavily reinforced, again achieved a victory. Sedgwick's retreat began at midnight; but he was discovered by the rebels, who played terrible havoc on the pontoons, killing and wounding a large number. The World says that its worst fears of the results of Hooker's efforts have been more than confirmed. He has been out-
