llowing reasons: 1st. Gen. Johnston's telegram is dated the 7th. Vicksburg is said to have surrendered on the 4th. Gen. Johnston says an officer who left Vicksburg on the 5th brought the intelligence. If there had been any surrender, Gen. Pemberton would have communicated it officially to Gen. Johnston, and Gen. Johnston would have so stated. 2d. It is not probable that Pemberton would have gratified Yankee pride by surrendering on the 4th. 3d. The New York Herald, of the 6th, Pemberton would have gratified Yankee pride by surrendering on the 4th. 3d. The New York Herald, of the 6th, has been seen. It says not a word about the surrender, and the Baltimore Gazette, of the same date, says Grant is retreating from Vicksburg. 4th. It has been said that the surrender was induced by a mutiny among the troops. This is improbable. The Mississippians and Louisianian constituted the vast majority of the troops in question. They would neither mutiny nor permit others (a small morsel) to mutiny. We give this reasoning for what it is worth, expressing no opinion of our own
