--During 1862 there were tried 20,000 persons in England, 6,656 in Ireland, and 3,630 in Scotland, and of the whole number 7,815 were acquitted and 21,801 convicted, of which latter class 3,962 were consigned to "penal servitude." which is about equivalent to our State prison.
