Cold plunge. --At a late hour last Tuesday night, as Mr. S. G. Carpenter was posting along the south bank of the basin, he heard a plunge and splash in the water, and soon after a cry for help. Hurrying to the spot from which the sound proceeded, he there discovered a German in the water, struggling for life. Finding a pole near by, Mr. C. soon fished out the frightened man, who gave his name as Rush, and professed to be a bread-baker in one of the hospitals. Rush stated that he was on his way to Gamble's Hill, from the east end of the city, and that, knowing but little of the basin, he fell into the water before he was aware of it.
