Arrest of a forger.
--The career of an accomplished forger and swindler was yesterday brought to an end by the arrest and imprisonment of Alexander D. Chestward alias Cheatham.
For some years back the accused has been employed as clerk in various establishments in this city, but at the time of his arrest was engaged in the large auction house of Laniers, Tolleson & Catlett, on Pearl street. Chestward has successfully passed numbers of checks purporting to have been drawn by his last emplo treet, in the sum of $310. At his boarding house was found various articles of clothing, dry goods, &c., besides seven pieces of fine linen which had been taken from Messrs. Sumner & Arents, with whom he was a short time since engaged as clerk.
Cheatham hails from Baltimore but we have been informed that he is from Goochland county, Va., and that he never has lived in the Monumental city.
On his person was found several exemption papers, and a certificate stating that he was a Maryland refugee
