In the Valley of the Mississippi the course of events has been more chequered by alternate good and had fortune. Springfield, Columbus, Shiloh, and even Murfreesboro', were noble successes for us. I have no disposition to extenuate the gravity of any of these disasters. But looking at them in their very worst aspect, there is nothing in any or all of them to give rise to a feeling of despondency.
