Remarkable, if true. --Yesterday a negro fellow calling himself George Washington, and professing to be the slave of Joseph Bryant, of Louisiana, was brought before the Mayor as a runaway. Wm. Michelle, a detective, stated that some weeks since the slave was put into his charge by Mr. Shepperson, freight agent on the Central road, who brought him from Trevillian's Depot. The negro's story is, that he was hired by his master to Burwell McKinney, of the army; that he accompanied his hirer to Pennsylvania, and was taken prisoner at the battle of Gettysburg; that he returned to Stafford with a portion of the Yankees, and there escaping from them, made his way to Trevillian's Depot, where he reported his case to the conductor of the train, and asked to be taken in charge. The Mayor continued the examination till Wednesday for the appearance of Mr. Shepperson. If the statement of the servant proves to be true, he deserves great credit for escaping from his Yankee tormentors, who wo
