Right of property. --Cornelius McNamara was arraigned before the Mayor yesterday to answer the charge of assaulting and beating Mrs. Elizabeth Backman on the day before. The lady exhibited to the Court a handful of hair which she said the prisoner had pulled from her head, and showed sundry bruises about her face that he had ungallantly inflicted. The cause of the trouble was that Mrs. Backman occupied a house in which she had erected a temporary partition before Mc N. purchased the premmises, and that she now wishes to remove the partition, (she still being the tenant,) to which McN. objects, but which she has a clear right to do. The Mayor held McNamara to ball for his good behavior, and discharged the lady, for whom a warrant had also been procured after she had been beaten. The right of property must be settled by another tribunal, the duties of the Mayor being entirely confined to criminal causes and to violations of the city ordinances, which he is required to enforce.
