sident Davis, Richmond: A Georgia regiment, of Benning's brigade, entered this city last night, at 10 o'clng it was done with the knowledge and consent of Gen. Benning, as he remarked to a gentleman an hour or two pry, and truly yours, Jefferson Davis. Gen. Benning being written to by Gen. Cooper, A. G., replied,m, sir, very respectfully, Your ob't serv't, Henry L. Benning Brigadier General. To S. Cooper, Adj'tr this purpose at the hotel, inquiring first for Gen. Benning, and in his absence, for the commander of the seI recognized as belonging to different regiments of Benning's brigade. It is to be marked that not one officer respectfully W S Shepherd. Lt. Col. 2d Ga. reg't Benning's brig. It was common rumor in Raleigh, torth Carolina troops, of whom mention is made in Gen. Benning's letter, were the leaders in the riot, conductie writes a letter exculpating Lt. Col. Shepherd, but not Gen. Benning, and here the correspondence closes.
