Halfork, General-in-Chief: If I have the honor to report that I cut the Virginia and Tennessee railroad at Salem, on the 14th inst., and have arrived safely at this point with my command, consisting of the 2d, 3d and 8th Virginia mounted infantry, 14th Pennsylvania, Dobson's battalion of cavalry, and Ewing's battery.
