The warrant for the arrest of Braine reached St. John on Christmas morning. It had been applied for three days before, but was delayed by the amount of evidence required by the authorities, who moved in the matter with extreme deliberation. The officer neglected to serve it even then, giving as an excuse a desire to at end church and Braine learning that a warrant had been issued, left St. John, going toward Halifax. He was followed by the officer the next day, but with no likelihood of overtaking him, until he reached Nova Scotia, where the warrant for his arrest would be invalid.
