her free negress, on Monday last. Mary, slave of Herman Woodward, charged with stealing three pounds of sugar, one and a half pounds of lard, and one dozen eggs, worth $20, belonging to Geo. A. Gathright, and for going at large, was ordered to be whipped, and her owner fined $5. Mike, Braxton, and Richard, negroes, were arraigned on the charge of stealing a barrel of crushed sugar, worth $1,500, from Robert Lackey, of the Medical Naval Directory, in Belvin's Block. The evidence failing to substantiate the charge, the negroes were discharged. Harriet, slave of Mortimer Sweeney, was ordered to be whipped for having in her possession several articles of wearing apparel, supposed to be stolen. Fifteen lashes were bestowed upon Levi, slave of Robert A. Mayo, charged with insolence towards Mr. Paul Michard. The same number of stripes were given Jim, slave of Thomas J. Evans, charged with disorderly conduct in the street, and having an improper pass in his possession.
