was postponed till to-morrow morning. Complaint was brought against Ann Mallard, a white woman, of stealing a shawl from Ella McDonald, at a party on 10th street, some nights since. After an examination of witnesses, the Mayor discharged her for want of evidence to prove her guilt. Jim, a slave of James Walton, was examined upon the charge of stealing a lot of brandy, flour, sugar, butter, &c., valued at about $3,000, from James B. Hays, a grocer, some days ago. There being nothing in the testimony to convict him of the theft, he was discharged. Owney Burk was fined $5 for permitting a nuisance to remain on her premises. A fine of $5 was imposed upon Peter Daly for striking with a stick a negro boy belonging to Turpin & Yarbrough, on Tuesday morning last. Daly did not like the idea of being fined for such an offence, and gave the Mayor to understand that he would permit no negro to give him insolence without administering to him a little taste of the shillalah.
