the whole of the guard and officers of the prison, who soon rushed out to learn what was the matter. On ascertaining what the sentinel on duty in front of the building in which the prisoners were confined had done, Detectives J. L. Wootters, Lemuel Powers, and the officer of the day, went into the prison to find out what damage had been done. Finding that no one was hurt, and all seemed to be right, Mr. Wootters poked his head out of one of the windows to inform the guard outside, when private Jordan, of company D, 20th Virginia battalion, taking him for one of the prisoners, immediately fired at him, the ball entering his right eye and lodging against the skull in the back part of his head. The unfortunate man fell to the floor, exclaiming "My God, I'm killed." Surgical assistance was immediately procured, but it is almost impossible that he can recover. He was afterwards taken to his residence, where late yesterday afternoon he was still alive, though evidently sinking fast.
