The Daily Dispatch: March 31, 1864., [Electronic resource], Escape of Confederate officers from the Nashville Penitentiary. (search)
Escape of Confederate officers from the Nashville Penitentiary. --The following Confederate officers recently escaped from the Military Prison at Nashville, and are now safe within our lines: Capt. G. S. Alexander, 2d Kentucky cavalry.--Capt. E. E. Carnes, 31st Tennessee mounted infantry. Capt. M. S. Royee, Starne's escort company Lt. J. B. Wilkinson, Jr., 3d Tennessee mounted infantry. Ex-Lt. O. B. Fouts, 2d Tennessee cavalry. They escaped on the night of the 29th February, by sawing through the floor of their room (which was immediately over the archway leading through the main building into the workshops of the Penitentiary,) and swinging down by their blankets into the avenue. They then lifted the bolts, opened the doors, and walked out into the street.
