annah. The New York Tribune heads its announcement with the word "Thunder, " in letters a half inch long. The report, which, of course, is untrue, is based on the following telegram from Annapolis: The steamship Varuna left Charleston bar on the 14th instant at 8 o'clock in the morning. The report had reached there by the rebel flag-of-truce boat that Sherman was in possession of Savannah, after an eight hours fight, capturing eleven thousand prisoners. A letter from Port Royal, South Carolina, dated the 12th, says: On Friday last, our forces on the Tilafinny succeeded in erecting a battery, with two thirty- pounders, which completely command the Charleston and Savannah railroad, and no cars now pass or attempt to pass over this, the last artery of communication left between Charleston and the remoter South. Our position is such that we can hold it permanently. Admiral Dahlgren and General Foster are now on board the flag steamer Philadelphia in consultation
